Porcelain dental crowns are a common restoration used in the field of dentistry. This “cap” plays a role in both protecting and restoring the smile. Our providers at the Williams Family and Cosmetic Dentistry in Brandon, FL, believe that patients can use these restorations to achieve better oral health, as well as improved functionality when used to repair broken or weakened teeth.
Drs. Trevor Williams and William Belton describe the dental crown as a restoration that is made to cover the exposed portion of a tooth. It is sometimes referred to as a “cap” because it caps off the top of the tooth, known as the crown. When a dental crown is created and bonded over a tooth, it protects it from further damage while restoring its functionality.
There are a few different situations in which a patient might require a dental crown. Some of the more typical needs include:
Dental crowns are made specifically for the patient based on the shape, size, and color of the existing teeth in the smile. This is achieved by first preparing the natural tooth for placement. Preparation includes removing tooth enamel from around the tooth’s structure. Then, impressions are made and sent to a dental laboratory for a ceramist to fabricate the final restoration. This is done with the patient’s existing teeth in mind to ensure the dental crown blends seamlessly into the patient’s smile. After approximately one to two weeks, the dental crown is mailed back to Williams Family and Cosmetic Dentistry, and the patient returns to have the final restoration bonded in place. Patients are given care information to practice at home to protect the crown and the natural tooth from any potential problems, such as cavities, periodontal disease, or breakage. When patients take good care of their dental crowns, they can expect them to last many years before replacement is needed. Our professionals also recommend that patients visit at least twice a year for a cleaning and evaluation to ensure the smile is healthy and to avoid the need for expensive, restorative dental work in the future.
