When it comes to oral care, prevention is crucial. Dr. Trevor Williams of Williams Family and Cosmetic Dentistry in Brandon, Florida, work with patients to help educate them on oral hygiene care steps they can follow to improve their dental health and wellness. By following a few simple at-home rules, you can help keep your smile healthy and sparkling between dental visits.
First and foremost, remember to brush your teeth at least twice a day. When brushing, use gentle circular motions, and be sure to brush on the inside surfaces of your teeth as well as the outside surfaces.
It’s important to floss daily. Flossing helps remove plaque and bacteria from between your teeth and along the gum line. Make sure to use approximately 18 inches of floss, and wind it around your fingers with a small amount of space between each finger. Gently slide the floss between each tooth and firmly under the gum line, making sure to cross over any debris that may be there. Then, push the floss up against an individual tooth and slide it into the space slightly, repeating this motion until you’ve reached the top of that tooth. You can then move to another tooth or section of teeth and continue this process until you’ve completed your entire mouth.
Visit the dentist twice a year, once in six months and once in 12 months. Excessive build-up can occur over time, and many don’t realize it’s taking place until they visit us at their next appointment. During these visits, patients will have a thorough evaluation and dental cleaning performed. X-rays may also be taken to look at the health of the teeth and bone underneath the gum tissues.
