What is The Dawson Academy?
Founded more than 45 years ago, The Dawson Academy operates on the premise that “There is no better ‘lab’ to determine what works best than the experience of practice itself.” Since 1979, this organization has provided postgraduate educational and clinical research opportunities to advance dentistry.
What services have you introduced because of The Dawson Academy?
The academy is like a learning lab, which allows us to acquire knowledge on new techniques, approaches, treatments, and technologies, as well as build upon and refine our existing knowledge. So, its reach into and influence on our office is multi-faceted. One of the most notable characteristics of The Dawson Academy is its focus on a core curriculum that accounts for the entire masticatory system. This is the unit of the body that is responsible for the vital chewing, speaking, and swallowing functions. Its “parts” include the bones, ligaments, teeth, joints, and muscles. With such a comprehensive understanding of all of the parts that contribute to healthy function and a balanced appearance, our team’s knowledge and services can transcend the aesthetics and health of the teeth and gums alone.
What are some related conditions that you treat with this knowledge?
Dr. Williams has developed significant proficiency in occlusal disease, which describes how the opposing teeth come together when you bite down and the mouth is closed. Problems with “bite” not only make the appearance of the smile, but they can also contribute to excessive wear and tear on the teeth and dental work and put patients at increased risk of breaking teeth or flattening of teeth which will enhance the bite imbalances that have also been implicated in development of TMJ symptoms.
What do you mean by “TMJ”?
TMJ refers to the Temporomandibular Joints or jaw joints. They facilitate movements, such as opening and closing the mouth. They are part of the masticatory system. Any time the TM joints are “stressed,” far-ranging and often highly disruptive symptoms can arise. Occlusal disease and a range of other conditions and behaviors may be responsible for the onset and increasing frequency and severity of TMJ Disorders or Dysfunction. Fortunately, with our diagnostic and therapeutic expertise, we can put a stop to the far-reaching effects of TMDs – from chronic headaches and tinnitus to lockjaw and facial pain – once and for all. We strive to understand and treat the underlying source of TMDs, not just for “treatment” of symptoms.
